But nothing happened.

As she stared at Santa, a sinking sensation somewhere in her gut, he shook his head. “I tried to tell you,” he said. “Jack Frost has this room charmed so that no magic other than his works here. Otherwise, I could have gotten myself out.”

Well, shoot. But a sudden thought occurred to her, and she replied, “But my invisibility charm still worked on this side of the door.”

“True, but — ”

She didn’t let him finish. Maybe she was barking up the wrong tree here, but she figured she might as well try. Laying her hands on the door, she recited the simple spell she used on those occasions when she managed to lock herself out of the house.

And the door swung inward.

Right then, she wasn’t sure which of them looked more surprised — her or Santa Claus. With a shrug, she said, “You told me magic doesn’t work in that room…but technically, the lock is on this side. I took a chance.”

“You always were clever,” Santa Claus said, his blue eyes bright with approval. He moved toward the door…

…and an ice-cold hand clamped itself on Stella’s shoulder, spinning her around even as the door slammed shut behind her.

She stared up into a pair of glacial gray eyes. Surrounding them were features as craggy and sharp as Norway’s fjords. His skin seemed grayish as well, although the lank hair that hung around his face was the color of fresh-fallen snow. The chill from his fingers seemed to spread through her entire body.

“Hello, my dear,” said Jack Frost. “Welcome to my palace.”
